Speaker of the Ohio House William G. Batchelder (R-Medina) today announced that Ryan Smith (R-Gallipolis) has been appointed by the House Republican Caucus to the vacant 87th House District seat.

“I am happy to have Ryan Smith joining the House of Representatives,” Speaker Batchelder said. “He has spent much of his life serving his community, including serving as a school board president, and I believe his experience and commitment will be an asset to the Ohio House and to the people of the 87th District.”

Smith is vice-president of Smith Financial Advisors, a Hilliard Lyons group, having started in the business in 1995. Until his appointment to the House, Smith was also the president of the Gallipolis City School Board of Education, a board on which he has served since 2007. Rep. Smith is the past president of the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce and is a recipient of the 2005 Hometown Hero Award from WSAZ TV, as well as the 2006 McGhee Community Service Award. He is a 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance.

Smith has served as president of the Gallia County Community Improvement Corporation and co-chair of the Red Dot for Kids Committee to build new school facilities in Gallipolis. He is also a former member of the Tri-State Area Boy Scouts of America.

Smith lives in Bidwell with his wife, Vicki, and their four children.
