Speaker of the Ohio House William G. Batchelder (R-Medina) today announced that the Republican Caucus has selected Gary Scherer of Circleville to replace former Rep. Bob Peterson (R-Sabina), who was appointed to the Ohio Senate. Mr. Scherer was selected by the House Republican Caucus screening panel after interviewing applicants over the weekend. The panel also included the chairman of the Fayette, Pickaway and Ross Republican parties.

“During the interview process, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with a number of qualified applicants,” said Representative Matt Huffman (R-Lima), who chaired the screening panel. “In the end, however, it was clear to the panel that the experience and credentials of Gary Scherer made him the most qualified person to fill the seat.”

“We are very fortunate to have someone like Gary Scherer join our caucus,” Speaker Batchelder said. “His extensive experience in the private sector makes him a welcomed addition to the House and I am confident that he will serve the citizens of the 85th District with integrity and enthusiasm.”

Gary Scherer owns 70 Jackson Hewitt franchises throughout Ohio, and he co-founded and served as president of Harr & Scherer, CPAs from 1994 to 2005. Prior to that, he co-founded Snyder, Scheffler, Scherer & Fast in Lancaster in 1984. A past member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs, he has served as the president of four state chapters of the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives. Additionally, he has been the president of the Circleville Oil Company since 2006.

A member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the National Rifle Association, Scherer also has served as president of the Circleville Rotary Club and the Circleville-Pickaway Chamber of Commerce.

Scherer graduated from The Ohio State University in 1976 with a degree in accounting. He lives with Debbie, his wife of 35 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.
